Downsizing
We left a 5 bedroom house with a fenced in yard and plenty of sidewalks in Des Moines to live in a 2 bedroom apartment and had to make some major adjustments. Most of our furniture and belongings are currently in storage or at our gracious parents' houses. We have a furnished apartment and brought only what we needed. I've shockingly really enjoyed living a little more minimally. Now, don't think too highly of us, we brought at least 4 boxes full of toys for the boys and all of our fancy kitchen appliances because that is where I seem to spend the most time in our apartment. Thankfully the apartment has a beautiful shared space with a backyard playset and an outdoor pool, so we haven't missed our yard and we've been able to meet other families who are in similar contract lifestyles!
The biggest adjustment we are still in the process of making is getting our two boys to sleep in the same bedroom. There is plenty of space, but if you've raised a 2yo, you know that they are extremely curious and staying in their bed can be a challenge. X continuously climbed out of his crib our first week here. Of course, he can't get his little self back into the bed, but he is great at climbing out. So after picking him up 1000x to put back in his bed, we decided to ditch the crib and now he sleeps on his mattress. He's gone through huge milestones while here. Started potty training, graduated from his crib and gets to sleep in the same room as M. We would've never combined their rooms in our previous house, so this has been an added adventure! Do you have any great stories about getting your kiddos to sleep?!
I am so thankful for the experiences we are getting on this journey. The outdoor beauty here is incredible, so it is easy to get out of the small apartment and venture outside. Plus, we have this beautiful view of farmland to the side of our apartment and often see what X calls "moo-ers" grazing.
