Hiking Spearfish Canyon - Roughlock Falls
We drove an hour to Spearfish Canyon. Through the canyon is a beautiful drive. We headed to the Roughlock Trailhead and meant to hike to Roughlock Falls, but turned the opposite way because husbands refuse to ask for directions, and the trail sign wasn't the easiest to read. I saw online that this trail was handicap accessible, so we were able to take the jogger stroller for X. We ended up heading toward Savoy Pond instead of the falls, but still had a grand adventure. This trail walked along Spearfish Creek with the road in view on the other side of the creek. We saw goats, wild raspberries, and a little moss nest with an egg in it built inside a boulder.
The boys did really well on this hike and loved hunting for raspberries and dipping their feet in the water. I asked a couple of people on the trail and eventually a park maintenance person how to get to Roughlock Falls and we were able to drive farther up the road and park pretty close! I would recommend this with small kids. The trailhead at Roughlock Falls Trail is labeled as handicap accessible, but it is steep for a stroller from what we could see. Farther up the road we parked and walked along the falls which were so beautiful. We all dipped our feet in the freezing cold water and M would’ve gone farther in if the boys had worn swimsuits. The weather has been flawless here. Plenty of sun, but not hot enough to keep you inside. The shade and water on the trail has helped keep us cool too!
Mom notes: stroller friendly, wear water friendly shoes, mix of shade and sun, might want swimsuits for creek stomping
