Polyface Farms
EZ and I started this adventure partially because we are saving up to buy land in the DSM area. Getting to travel and stay home with the boys ranked high up there too, but I think he first brought it up as a way to afford a little slice of DSM heaven. We'd like to end up on 20ish acres with a few animals and a small garden, and a couple kids that run barefoot (or booted) through the land. EZ has recently developed an interest in regenerative farming and we were so lucky to end up in Roanoke, 1.5 hours away from a famous regenerative farmer, Joel Salatin of Polyface Farms. We packed up the kids and made a day of it. M loved feeding leftover tomatoes to the chickens, X loved playing in their corn pit...filled with rocks, EZ was excited to meet Joel and show the boys the farm, I loved that we ended up taking home 4 dozen eggs and a cooler full of regeneratively farmed meat. I also loved wearing my new hiking boots and socks. In my old age, I've really come to appreciate a high quality shoe. The right shoes really make a trip. Especially outside in the elements. We were lucky to have beautiful weather. It was overcast, but the perfect temperature for just a sweater.
