Skyline Wilderness Hiking Trails
For our first hiking trip, I unknowingly picked a black diamond. It was our introduction to hiking just me and the boys. M LOVED it and will forever be a hiker after our experiences here in Rapid City. We headed up to Skyline Wilderness Area. There is a 1.9 mile loop you can follow using the markers, or there are different off shoots here as well. We just wandered and turned around. M and X loved climbing on the rocks which are sadly covered in graffiti. When we took E back here, there was glass all over our favorite rock area, so it must be someone's favorite drinking place too. This is a mostly shaded hike in the morning hours and the temperature is cooler than up at the road. There is plenty of parking and a public restroom at the top of the hike. It is actually just down the road from the Dinosaur Park and with that being X's favorite, we stopped by on our way out. This hiking trail has simple beautiful rock formations and the views are incredible. It is a challenging hike with a 2yo that needs to be lifted and carried through certain spaces, but it is doable for the most part. Tread carefully and only go where you are comfortable.
My motto on our adventures has been, "You can always turn around". I'm not the best navigator, so this definitely keeps me calm when I venture off to a knew place with no cell reception. Stay tuned for more hiking adventures!
