DSM Trip

We ran home to DSM to avoid the Sturgis Bike Rally. We heard it was a crowded, wild week and figured we'd go spend time with the family instead of dealing with the crowds. It is a LOOONNNGGG 10 hour drive both ways. The boys did great. M really loved doing crafts in the car this time and a couple puzzle activities from Target. X is chill in the car and will sit and read books or hold his trucks all ride long. Of course we packed a zillion snacks and some healthy suckers we recently found. Those were a fun treat in the middle of a long ride. We made sure to stock up on our favorites from Trader Joe's (sunflower butter, pickles, yogurt, heavy cream, monkey chips, and olive oil potato chips), Costco (beef sticks, and more beef sticks) and Friedrich's (their gluten free sweet breads are 5 star). Plus these amazing pork rinds from Target that no one sells in Rapid City. I continued my brisket kick and no one topped Sodak Smoke Shack in DSM.

M was so sad to leave the cuzzies and their beautiful farm knowing we won't see them until October. Both boys of course already miss the grandparents and their friends. M requested to drive by our old house and that was heart wrenching for me. I loved that space so much and would buy it back in a heart beat. M said he wanted to move back in, but keep the hammock and trampoline they now had in the backyard...me too buddy, me too.

It was both a wonderful visit and also a sad one. I knew I would be sad not starting the school year, but being back in town made it all seem real. It is easy to pretend we're on extended summer while in Rapid City. Say a few prayers for me as the school year starts because I sure will miss it. And say even more prayers for all of the teachers returning to the classroom. Last year was incredibly tough, so this year has to be better. Good luck to everyone this school year, and we'll be back in October for a longer trip.
