Deadwood with Gammie

After visiting Roughlock Falls with Gammie, we headed to Deadwood for lunch at Flyt Steakhouse. They have excellent burgers and a great lunch special M-Th. Sadly, we were there on Friday...good planning on our part right? But, the food was great! Flyt is owned by the same people who run Alpine Inn in Hill City. It is not on Main St., so it was easier to get to as a family of 4. We didn't plan to walk Main St., but I went against my normal rules and decided to be flexible and not panic about making it home in time for nap. If you know us well, you know sleep schedules are pretty much the law in our house. I was so thankful the wagon was in the car with it's cover because it was drizzly day (this is the FIRST day it has rained on us while out adventuring. Usually it is a nighttime thunderstorm. Very thankful for the rain though as the smoke from wildfires in Canada and Montana has been blowing through. Hopefully it will help clear it. I think I say this every time, but I am so amazed by how great the weather was here all summer long. Sometimes we had a hard time getting outdoors in Des Moines due to the humidity, heat, and mosquitos. That hasn't held us back here because it is dry, sunny, and not buggy in the least. Thanks for listening to my weather forecast...We've been collecting pressed pennies with Gammie here, so we had to make a stop to get one from downtown Deadwood. If this is your thing, Miss Kitty's Mercantile is the place to press a penny. And you can snap a picture with Kodi the giant stuffed bear. Main St. in Deadwood is a great place to walk with the family, have a meal or a drink, and do some touristy shopping. They also have hourly(ish) history lessons that include tours and street shows. We didn't make it to a street show. I think M would like the shootout, but I am not quite ready to explain to him why they are reenacting shooting other people in the street. It is about an hour back to our apartment from Deadwood and thankfully X dozed off in the car and let me lay him down in bed after. That is a rarity, so I know we were blessed that it all worked out.

Sisters in Seattle

One of the main reasons we took our 3 week trip was to see my oldest sister and her hubby out in Seattle! They've lived there for 25 years and we've been out a few times, but the boys had never been. One thing about my sister is she is the most incredible host. We showed up to gift bags on our beds, the use of their 2 bedrooms while they scooted down to the basement, and a pantry packed full of everyone's favorite snacks. Coeur d’Alene, ID and Snoqualmie Falls, WA

From Glacier, we headed to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. This stop was such a pleasant surprise! I did not know how beautiful it would be. The weather was perfect the day we were there. We spent time at McEuen Park playing on the playground. Then while T napped with EZ, the boys and I walked the floating boardwalk and hiked Tubbs Hill to a small beach area where the boys climbed rocks and collected pieces of nature to create a treasure pile.  The next day, we headed toward Seattle and made a stop at Snoqualmie Falls. With my sister having lived in Seattle almost 25 years, we’ve visited a few times and went to Snoqualmie about 20 years ago! (Surely I’m not old enough to have memories from 20 years ago.) The top of the falls are easy to get to from the parking lot, but the bottom of the falls was a steep hike down past all the worn out people climbing back up. The boys are great hikers, but after 3 days in the car, and not great sleep, we were apprehensive about lugging them back up the hill...

Reptile Gardens

Reptile Gardens is exactly as the name describes it! I was pleasantly surprised by how beautiful the gardens were. I am not a reptile fan, but M sure is. He is all about snakes which give me the heebs. I prefer tarantulas over snakes any day. The main dome of the gardens is one of the first things we did, and there was a point where I felt like I was in a bad horror movie where someone might release the snakes and crocodiles at any moment. EZ shook his head at me when I relayed that story later on. The first trip to Reptile Gardens could be pricey for a tourist, but you can get a season pass with the price of admission by snapping a photo with their designated signs throughout the park. We had a playdate here with a mom and her two boys that I met at a park. It was a great place to spend the whole morning with friends and there is a good mix of indoor/outdoor activities.
